WWII Torpedo Squadrons
What was to become the FIST of the FLEET was conceived on September 15, 1941, when the keel of the USS BUNKER HILL (CV-17) was laid. On January 1 1943, VT-17 was formed under the command of LCDR Frank W. “Silver Fox” Whitaker. In those previous fifteen months, the US Navy was busy recruiting, training, and purchasing the aircraft and thousands of items the squadron would need when the USS Bunker Hill was commissioned on May 24, 1943.
Note: CVG-17 was also formed on January 1, 1943. This air group became CVBG-17, then CVBG-5 in 1946 and redesignated CVG-6 in 1948. It became CVW-6 in 1963 and was disestablished on April 1, 1992. Numerical designation of air groups began in 1942, many numbered according to their assigned ship (CV-17 .. CVG-17) and each ship had a distinctive graphic design for its aircraft. Aircraft assigned to USS Bunker Hill were identified with a vertical arrow on the tail.
Torpedo Squadron 31 (VT-31) served the United States Navy from their creation on May 1, 1943 until the squadrons were dissolved on October 25, 1945. Fighter Squadron 31 was the highest scoring CVL (light carrier) squadron and the 4th highest scoring squadron when including the fleet carriers (CVs which had 3 times the number of pilots in them). They had the highest kill ratio per pilot of any squadron in the US Navy which is a record that stands today.
In December 1941, shortly after Pearl Harbor, the US Navy made the decision to form a torpedo squadron from the air group aboard the USS Ranger (CV-4). The formal commissioning of Torpedo 4 took place on January 10, 1942, while the USS Ranger lay at anchor off Bermuda. Thus, VT-4 achieved the distinction of being the first torpedo squadron commissioned at sea.

VT-8 - Midway story
In the Battle of Midway, there were many Sailors who were immediately recognized for their actions. The dive bombers whose payloads were delivered on target and sank the Japanese carriers were among the first to be noted as heroes of this monumental victory. But there were some who may not have been recognized because they failed to accomplish their primary mission to deliver their torpedoes and sink as many ships in the Japanese fleet as possible. This was the fate of Torpedo Squadron 8.
Originally attached to the U.S.S. Shangri-La in 1944 as a single large fighter squadron, the 72 plane “Fighting Squadron” was ordered on Jan. 2nd 1945 to divide into a 36 plane “Bombing Fighting Squadron” [to have aircraft side numbers 01 through 36], and a 36 plane “Fighting Squadron” [to have side numbers counting up from 38 on]. The personnel were arbitrarily assigned one or the other, and in many cases bunked with those in the other squadron. Actual aircraft types and numbers varied continually as aircraft were lost to combat and accidents and their subsequent replacements arrived. VF-85 also had 6 F6F Hellcats assigned as night fighters and photo recon ships.
The remainder of Air Group 85 as assigned to the Shangri-La were the “Bombing Squadron” VB-85 flying SB2C Helldivers and the “Torpedo Squadron” VT-85 flying TBF Avengers.

Freeman Field Museum
In late 1997, a large quantity of Luftwaffe aircraft parts and other equipment was unearthed at Freeman Field, in Seymour, Indiana. This discovery came after several years of research and exploratory digging. The story of the finding of the World War II German aircraft parts is an interesting one that helps answer many of the rumors about the field's activities at the end of the war.

Interesting World War Two Facts About Air Warfare
If you are a World War Two facts history buff, you know that air warfare plays a pivotal role. As the United States faces off with Japan in the struggle for dominance in the Pacific, it is carrier air power that turns the tide. On December 7, 1941, Japan unleashes a surprise bombing raid on U.S. Naval and air installations. The U.S. Navy turns the tide at Coral Sea and Midway the following summer. The U.S. gains the upper hand and rolls back Japanese dominance through superior sea-based air power and tactics.

USS Bunker Hill - CV-17 - The Monument
Bunker Hill (CV-17) was launched 7 December 1942 by Bethlehem Steel Co., Quincy, Mass.; sponsored by Mrs. Donald Boynton; and commissioned 24 May 1943, Captain J. J. Ballentine in command.
Reporting to the Pacific in the fall of 1943 Bunker Hill participated in carrier operations during the Rabaul strike (11 November 1943); Gilbert Islands operation, including support of the landings on Tarawa (13 November-8 December); the Kavieng strikes in support of the Bismarck Archipelago operation (25 December 1943, 1 and 4 January 1944); Marshall Islands operation (29 January-8 February); strikes against Truk (17-18 February), during which eight Japanese combatant vessels were sunk; Marianas raid (23 February); Palau-Yap-Ulithi-Woleai raids (30 March-1 April); Truk-Satawan-Ponape raids (29 April-1 May); Hollandia operation (21-28 April); and Marianas operation (12 June-10 August), including the Battle of the Philippine Sea. On 19 June 1944, during the opening phases of the battle, Bunker Hill was damaged when an enemy near miss scattered shrapnel fragments across the ship. Two men were killed and over 80 were wounded. Bunker Hill continued to do battle and her planes aided in sinking one Japanese carrier and destroying a part of the 476 Japanese aircraft that were downed. During September she participated in the Western Caroline Islands operation and then launched strikes at Okinawa, Luzon, and Formosa until November.
